Team Coast Guard
A new coat of paint for the 42nd Street Ramp
On May 22nd, 2004 - National Safe Boating Day
I met MSTCS Ron Collins - Reservist from MSO Group Portland.
We looked over the Auxiliary Vessel Safety
Check Station and I was telling Ron how badly it needed to be
painted and fixed up - that it was an eyesore for the USCG
Auxiliary. Our Auxiliarists at this time were pretty busy with
operations and Rose Festival was a couple of weeks away, so Aux
was planning for Rose Festival security zone.
Ron
said he was in Portland for America's Waterway Watch and did not
have the printed materials he needed to make his rounds, so he
had some extra time in the office. I did not have to twist his
arm much - Ron offered to paint the station for the Auxiliary.
The station needed to be scraped and painted
inside, painted outside and the roof needed to be fixed.
Paint was found inside the station and was put
to good use. Ron was anticipating that Portland would have great
weather the next week, so on Monday morning he showed up with
some other USCG from MSO Group Portland and started working on
the station.
Ron and his team worked Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday on the station and when Joe and I arrived on
Wednesday, the station really looked "spiffy". And it was just
in time. On July 1, 2004, Multnomah County Sheriff's office
dedicated a new patrol boat "Freedom" and we had dignitaries
from all over the area.
It was gratifying to look over at the
Auxiliary Vessel Safety Check station - it looked ready for
business.
42nd St Ramp is the busiest ramp in the State
of Oregon and is an excellent place for our Vessel Safety Check
station. I want to make sure that Ron and his team are
recognized for their contribution to the partnership between all
of Coast Guard Forces.

Andrew Kondor and SNGM Dustin Capel

Just another great example of the "can do"
attitude we see every day in working with the active duty,
reserve and civilian components of the Coast Guard. Bravo Zulu.
